Sheila May is not the first electric Launch I ‘ve been involved with. I built a small electric launch while working at the Tender Craft Boat Shop in 1993/94. It was splashed on the 1st of May (see pic on the right),  memorable because on my return to the shop with the boat, I was advised to make haste to the hospital  to welcome my daughter, Sheila May into the world I made it in good time!)

This Sheila May:

Intended for inland waters,  “Sheila May” is meant for relaxing picnic or sunset cruises, or to serve where internal combustion engines are prohibited. Although shown with a center console helm position, other arrangements can be made including helm positions forward or at the stern with tiller steering. 

The boat is intended for woodstrip epoxy/glass construction The hull is built up from a substantial keel stem assembly of laminated Douglas Fir with  5/8″ thick western red cedar strips and encapsulated in fibreglass and epoxy. Internal framing is intended to support the motor, battery storage, and the furnishings for passengers – seating for 5 or 6 passengers.

With the existing arrangements, I positioned   a 48 V electric motor in the 8-12 kW range, amidships.  As drawn, 4 Victron 25.6V 300 ah batteries are  fitted in a weather resistant box with a sump for drainage.  Space within the center console provides room for motor speed controllers and battery charging/monitoring equipment. Electric power and battery storage continue to make improvements so there is flexibility in the design to change as necessary.
